Omega 3 supplements. Could your dog benefit?

Omega oils are also known as essential fatty acids (EFAs). There are three main groups of EFAs:
Omega-3: Common source being marine animals and some plant sources such as flaxseed.
Omega- 6: Relatively common, found in meat, eggs, cereal grains, seeds, and vegetable oils.
Omega- 9: Common in animal fat and vegetable oils. Not actually essential, as the body can create them.

Why are they called “essential”?
In medicine, the term essential means that the body can’t produce the nutrient within the body, thereby making it “essential” that it comes from the diet.

The importance of BALANCING your pet’s intake of Omega 3 vs Omega-6 & 9
Getting the intake balance of Omega-3, 6 and 9 is critical (in both animals and humans). Modern diets in dogs and humans have higher proportions of Omega-6 and 9. It's critical to note that increased intake of Omega-6 and 9 (not Omega-3) leads to inflammation, slower healing and faster aging.  Whereas a correct balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids in the immune system will direct the cells to react in a less reactive, less inflammatory pathway.1

How an omega-3 supplement can help your pet
Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and promote health and healing. They really are essential for optimum health.

Advantages include improvements in:
  • Brain function and prevention of dementia
  • Hair growth and coat condition
  • Slowing the aging process
  • Slowing the growth of common yeast infections in dogs and cats2
  • Skin health - Skin is the first line of defence, and poor skin condition increases your dog or cat’s risk of itching, irritation, skin allergies and bacterial infections.2
  • Reproductive health
  • Joint health

Precautions
If your pet has suffers from pancreatitis or associated symptoms, the use of an oil supplement may not be appropriate. Be sure to consult your veterinarian prior to use.

Storage of your Omega 3 oil
Omega-3 EFA’s are unstable and are easily destroyed (turn rancid) by heat, light, and air (oxidation). You’ll notice all of the bottles are either plastic or dark glass for this reason. Keep any fish oil tightly sealed, ideally in the refrigerator or a cool, dark dry place.
